Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon

New postby clem on Wed Dec 21, 2011 2:47 am
I'm not going to argue whether Gnome Shell is a good or a bad desktop. It's just not what we're looking for. The user experience the Gnome team is trying to create isn't the one we're interested in providing to our users. There are core features and components we absolutely need, and because they're not there in Gnome Shell, we had to add them using extensions with MGSE. The extension system in Gnome Shell is handy but core parts of a desktop need to be able to communicate with each others and be integrated properly. The Gnome development team is not interested in the features we implemented, it's opposed to adding them to Gnome Shell, and it doesn't share our vision of a desktop. In other words, our work on Gnome 3 does not influence the development of Gnome Shell, Gnome Shell isn't going in a direction that is suitable for us, and we're not interested in shipping Gnome Shell "as is", or in continuing with multiple hacks and extensions.

MATE is different. It just needs time to mature but it provides what most of our Gnome 2 users want. We're currently working on releasing version 1.2.0 (which unstable release is in testing at the moment). I personally have high hopes for MATE and whatever we do with Cinnamon, it's comforting people still have the choice to run what is now coming really close to what Gnome 2 was.

Cinnamon is ALPHA but it starts with a stable fork of Gnome Shell 3.2.1 and the features present in MGSE. It works well and it's already a better implementation of what we want from a desktop than Gnome Shell and MGSE. Its aim isn't to reproduce exactly Gnome 2, like MATE does, but to innovate and do something new... By new, I don't mean new paradigms. There's a new generation of desktops out there, including Gnome Shell and Unity. These desktops are shiny, they look good and they're slowly gaining popularity. They're based on new and exciting technologies but they also come with a cost... they're re-inventing the way we use our computer. It's neither right or wrong of course, but it will only appeal to a certain category of users.. and there are a lot of people out there, myself included, who aren't convinced the traditional desktops were bad and who are concerned about not having a choice as more and more people switch towards these new technologies. With Cinnamon we're jumping on these new technologies and we're able to provide something that looks as modern as Unity and Shell, without reinventing the wheel when it comes to user experience. As a distribution we're also guaranteeing we can provide a desktop which implements the vision we have for Linux Mint. And finally, we can add much more many features, integrate our own technology into the desktop itself and do all of this cleanly as opposed to using patches and hacks.

If I had to summarize all of this, I'd simply tell you: We pick the best components for our releases, but if we don't find what we're looking for, we get involved. Gnome Shell isn't what we want and we can't change it to our liking. The one thing we want for Linux Mint 13 is a desktop people can use and say "this is better than Gnome 2". It's ambitious, we made the first steps with MGSE, but more work is needed and we won't achieve this goal simply by writing extensions.

apt update
apt install cinnamon-session

Wellicht wordt dit de vervanger van MGSE.
Remember, Cinnamon is in it's early development stages so expect to find bugs and missing features!

GNOME Shell Extensions site in alfa fase

Screensaver in gnome-shell

Linux Mint 12

Many bugs were fixed in preparation for the final release:
 • apturl is now fully functional
 • adding PPA repositories was fixed
 • MATE received a critical update to mate-session-manager (this bug prevented MATE to be started from the login screen for i386 users)
 • mintMenu was ported to MATE
 • packages now open with gdebi
 • mgse-menu received keyboard navigation and multiple bug fixes
 • mgse-windowlist was given a brand new look and now looks extremely similar to the Gnome 2 window list
 • mgse-bottompanel now makes it possible to switch between workspaces using the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+Alt+Arrow keys
 • Mint-Z now features silver-looking bottom panels, menu and window list which look similar to Mint 11, as well as a new theme called Mint-Z-Dark which features black components and looks like an improvement of the MGSE desktop from the RC release.
 • The ability to open directories as root was added to Gnome 3
The feedback we got from the RC wasn’t as straight forward as it usually is. As expected, the introduction of Gnome 3 is dividing the Mint community. We were delighted to see that MGSE was well received and that it helped people migrating to Gnome 3. MGSE received a lot of noticeable improvements since and the final release of Linux Mint 12 will come with a Gnome 3 experience that is significantly better than in the RC release.
I personally understand the fact that some Gnome 2 users are extremely concerned. Whether it’s Gnome 3 or MATE, these technologies are recent and they’re not as mature as Gnome 2. It’s important to understand that they represent our future though, and that sticking to Gnome 2 would make the situation in terms of packages and runtime conflicts with both Gnome 3 and Ubuntu completely unmanageable. In other words, if we were to stick to Gnome 2.32, Linux Mint would no longer be compatible with Ubuntu and you would not be able to run Gnome 3 in Linux Mint. We were one of the last distributions to support Gnome 2, we’re amongst the very few to support MATE and we’re innovating on Gnome 3 to ease this transition and make people feel at home on this new desktop. With Linux Mint 12 we’re giving Mint users the option to try MATE and to migrate to Gnome 3/MGSE. Though it might be considered a step backwards, these two desktops will improve rapidly and this is a process which needs to be done at some stage. Previous releases of Linux Mint are still available to users who prefer Gnome 2 of course, and by the time they become obsolete, both MATE and Gnome 3/MGSE will have matured, MATE into an ever-closer incarnation of Gnome 2, and Gnome3/MGSE into a brand new implementation of the vision we have for the Linux Mint desktop.

Interview met Clem

Given the rave reviews that Linux Mint has been getting recently, it would be perfectly understandable if the man driving the distribution was a little swollen-headed by this time.

But Clement Lefebvre appears to have both his feet planted very firmly on the ground as he guides the team that produces what is now predicted to soon overtake Ubuntu as the most widely used GNU/Linux distribution.

Lefebvre says he has no plans to commercialise the project. He works full-time on Linux Mint. "My work is funded by the project itself. We're also planning to hire more people full time in the future," he told iTWire, in response to a query.

On the website of the distribution, there is a line that says Linux Mint is the fourth largest operating system in terms of use, after Windows, Mac OSX, and Ubuntu.

The Distrowatch website, which ranks various distributions for the popularity, has Mint in top position. But this is only measured in terms of page hits which the site of a distribution receives in a day.

Ladislav Bodnar, who runs Distrowatch, told iTWire that the page-hit rankings measured one IP address for each day - in other words, repeated accesses from the same IP on a single day would only count as one hit.

Lefebvre is frank about his userbase. "We don't know how many Linux Mint users there are," he said. "Prior to the release of Firefox 4, most distributions used their own user agents and these were tracked by Distrowatch.

"Assuming that website was as popular among our userbase than the userbase of other distributions, we could record with precision, at the time, that our userbase was about three times smaller than Ubuntu, three times larger than Fedora/SUSE and about four times larger than Mandriva.

"This was not based on the Distrowatch rankings (which measure popularity more than usage), but on the share that Linux Mint represented within the visitors of that website, according to their browser user agent."

But Lefebvre was sure that Mint had grown faster than Ubuntu since. "We're now confident our userbase is much larger than a third of theirs. Did we outgrow them yet in terms of users? We don't know. My personal feeling is that we didn't but that we will in the months to come."

He said he was hesitant to estimate the number of users of any distribution. "Ubuntu claim to have around 20 million users, that would put us somewhere between seven and 20 million... but this is all extremely theoretical.

"I find it better to claim what we know for sure, there's been a huge gap between Linux Mint and Ubuntu in terms of users in the past, that gap is reducing fast (we've recorded growth of some 40 per cent in a single month and we can see a lot of people coming from Ubuntu, especially since their last two releases).

"There's also been a huge gap between Linux Mint and other distributions, and although some of them have grown since, none of them are growing faster than Linux Mint."

Lefebvre said that from a marketing point of view, at some stage, the project would need to know whether it had more users than Ubuntu.

"In my opinion, this is not the case yet. What we know for sure is that our second place on the Linux market is extremely secure and that, unless something drastic happens in the near future, we will eventually outgrow Ubuntu and become the most widely used Linux distribution. To come up with figures and be able to say it with certitude though, we'll need more data and metrics."

 • Andere gebruikers vragen om hulp met Linux Mint;
 • Zelf ondersteuning geven aan andere gebruikers;
 • Gewoon met andere gebruikers chatten.

Linux Mint Users BE en IRC

Wij stellen twee kanalen beschikbaar, te weten
 • #linuxmintusers-be-help - ons kanaal voor vragen omtrent Mint;
 • #linuxmintusers-be-offtopic - ons kanaal voor een gezellige babbel.

Zo geraakt u in onze kanalen

Wanneer u XChat opnieuw start, komt u automatisch in onze praatkanalen terecht.

/msg NickServ register <wachtwoord> <e-mail>

XChat6.png

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily/ppa
